Yarn, patterns and tools for the textile artist

Crystal Palace Yarns has been supplying knitters, crocheters and retail yarn shops from Richmond, California since 1971, under the parent company Straw Into Gold, Inc. This site gathers the reference material that knitters return to again and again: free patterns, indie designs, yarn cards, needle specifications and the shop list.

We do not sell yarn directly to the public. Yarn is purchased through the retail shops listed on our Shop List, which covers the USA, Canada, other countries and online retailers. For wholesale enquiries, write to cpyinfo@straw.com.

Undyed yarns in hanks are available for dyers, and a monthly newsletter, “Purls from the Palace,” can be subscribed to from the contact page.

Crystal Palace Yarns has been supplying knitters, crocheters and retail yarn shops from Richmond, California since 1971, operating under the Straw Into Gold name. The site presents itself as a working resource rather than a glossy storefront, gathering free knit and crochet patterns, indie designs, yarn cards, DAISY resin needles and a shop locator into one practical place that textile artists can actually use.

The free pattern library is the heart of the site, offering knit and crochet designs across a wide range of sizes and skill levels so that anyone from a first-time crafter to an experienced designer can find something workable. Patterns are accompanied by photos and sizing information, with downloadable files available for printing or saving, and the collection is regularly updated so that returning visitors always have something new to try.

Indie design is a recurring theme, highlighting original patterns and small-batch work rather than catalogue staples. This approach gives independent designers visibility and gives users a steadier supply of unusual, less familiar designs. The design division includes historical records and archival material as well, preserving older pattern documents and background history for anyone interested in the lineage of the craft.

Beyond patterns, the site covers tools and materials for the textile artist, including lightweight bamboo and resin needles in a range of sizes, from fine sock and hat work through to larger needles for blankets and outerwear. Felting tips, historical articles, background essays and a message board all sit alongside the shop, giving the resource a community and educational dimension that pure retail pages rarely achieve.

A shop locator helps visitors find retail outlets and wholesale suppliers that stock Crystal Palace yarns, with listings that note shop locations, what each store carries and useful details such as classes, felted goods, bags and quilting services. Because the company serves both the individual crafter and the retail trade, this kind of directory is a genuinely practical bridge between the maker and the store that sells the yarn.

Wholesale relationships with independent yarn shops form a large part of the business, and the site acknowledges how much those stores matter to the knitting and quilting movements. Shops often display yarn cards and stock supplies for local knitters, which in turn keeps the wider craft community connected to the people who make and dye the fiber in the first place.

The company also appears in records of larger textile events and historical collections, with links to archives, documents, media coverage and prior permission-based electronic files. These references suggest a long-standing presence in the craft world and an interest in preserving the paperwork and published material associated with decades of pattern distribution and supply.

Visually the site leans utilitarian and trustworthy, using a deep brick red against white and light grey with dark charcoal text, bold sans-serif headings and solid rectangular buttons rather than decorative flourishes. Section separation relies on flat color bands instead of borders, and small green checkmarks give the lists an affirmative, reassuring tone that suits a catalogue of practical information.

Overall, Crystal Palace Yarns presents itself as a durable, working resource: a Richmond-based supplier with a long history that has grown around free patterns, indie designers, needle ranges, felting guidance and a network of stocking shops. The emphasis stays on making materials and information available to the people who use them, which is why the site reads less like a sales page and more like an archive of the craft.

Patterns written for real yarn and real tools

Every free pattern is listed with the yarn and needles it calls for, so you can match what you already have in your basket. The Deco-Ribbon cell phone bag patterns, for example, are knitted in 1/1 ribbing or stockinette on size 9 Bamboo needles, using Deco-Ribbon with Splash or Fizz trim. The Bamboozle Summertime Lace Shawl is worked in eight 50 gram balls of Bamboozle, a blend of bamboo, cotton and elastic nylon that helps the finished fabric keep its shape.

Indexes that get you there fast

Instead of scrolling an endless list, start from the index that matches the project on your needles. The Sock Index collects free sock patterns, the Bag Index gathers felted bags alongside other knit and crochet bag designs, and the Hat Index holds a large selection of free hat patterns for every skill level.
