Finishing
Cut yarn, leaving long tail. Thread through tapestry needle and thread
through each rem st on needle as if to purl, taking sts off needle. Pull tightly
to close top of hat.
Weave in ends on WS.
Felting
Put the hat in the washer along with a pair of jeans or canvas tennis shoes.
Use a small amount of detergent and a low water level with a hot temperature.
Wash for five minutes. Stop the cycle and check to see if is felted as tightly
as desired; the longer you wash it, the smaller and more felted it will become.
If the hat is not quite felted enough, continue washing and carefully check
every few minutes. For the most accurate results, wring it out and try it on,
even though it's wet. When you're satisfied, rinse it out by hand with cold
water.
Shape the hat using your head, a wig form, bowls, etc. Shape the hat as
desired; the fabric will still be malleable so dont be afraid to pull it in
various directions. Once it is the desired size and shape, you can stuff it with
plastic bags if needed. Allow hat to dry completely.
